Character Education Beyond the Classroom Walls
Character education is an integral part of the Montessori Method — and at this school it goes far beyond lessons in grace and courtesy. It expands across classroom walls and into the communities and towns children live in, touching people, places, communities, and diverse ecosystems, including animal, plant, and wildlife life. The goal is to instill respect, love, and appreciation for humanity and our planet, giving children the knowledge and opportunities they need to make a positive difference. As students mature, they learn to look critically at their world and their community. They become adept at recognizing social issues that need support and change, and they work cooperatively to organize community service and bring about real improvement. That desire to make a difference begins at a very young age.

Hamilton Montessori School offers many meaningful community service opportunities for children and their families. A unique circle of families, teachers, and children comes together in cooperation and collaboration to implement purposeful programming that helps the less fortunate in our society.
Linking students to the outside community exposes them to people and situations that help them gain knowledge and real experience. Understanding the diversity and social structures of their communities prepares children to take a productive role in society. The school is deeply committed to providing the best possible experience and to exciting children about community service.
This work grows from a simple philosophy: we all have a responsibility to reach beyond ourselves and connect to others. Children learn to be aware of the needs of others, to assume responsibility and accountability, and to understand the importance of being supportive. Through giving, students become selfless, empathetic, creative, and compassionate. The community, students, and their families all benefit from these connections, and special relationships are created. The school provides fertile ground for nurturing the qualities that help children become citizens of the world and good stewards of the planet.
Recent Community Service Projects
Students collected toys, books, stuffed animals, clothing, coats, and jackets as holiday gifts for displaced or struggling families; the gifts were placed under the school's Giving Tree.
Provided food donations to support the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.
Collected toys for the Toys for Tots program.
Raised over $200 toward a special stabilizer chair for a child with cerebral palsy.
Coordinated donations for women and their children at Women's Space's Trenton location.
Collected winter coats for the Trenton Rescue Mission.
Organized a clothing drive for all ages to benefit the Trenton Rescue Mission.
Collected food for Mercer Street Friends in Trenton.
