The Three-Year Cycle
There are many reasons for the multi-aged classrooms in a Montessori school. Montessori schools strive to give students a sense of belonging to a family, and the classroom grows together much like siblings and parents — helping and learning from one another. This is the spirit behind the three-year cycle: it mirrors the stability and continuity of the family, with a three-year age span in each classroom. Montessori discovered that children develop qualities crucial to their social and mental development when they work together at different levels of ability.

A Spiral of Integrated Studies
The Montessori curriculum centers on five focus areas: practical life, sensorial, math, language arts, and cultural subjects. Unlike the traditional school model that separates subjects into individual courses of study, the Montessori approach integrates the topics of each subject area into one thematic approach. For example, when students study a country such as Greece, they also are introduced to Greek mythology in reading, cook a Greek delight like baklava, listen to Greek bouzouki in music, learn traditional folk dances, study the economy and natural resources, and explore the geography and ecosystem of the country. In this way, reading, practical life, cultural subjects, economics, science, and geography all connect. In early childhood these lessons are introduced in their simplest form and then reintroduced in increasing degrees of abstraction as the child grows — a spiral course of studies that reappears at higher levels rather than being presented once at a single grade level. This system of interrelated themes is unique to the Montessori method and is one of our school’s great strengths, embedding deep within the child a knowledge of the physical universe, nature, and the human experience. We hold our academic programs to a high level of challenge and expectation while keeping pace with accelerated information, technology, and innovation, and we offer an extensive, well-rounded enrichment program to every student.

Summer Fun Camp starts June 19th — come explore your world with us! The Montessori School of Hamilton is proud to announce “Explore Your World” Summer Fun with “Extreme Kids” Summer Camp. We have many new ideas and electives to choose from, incorporating activities that enhance and stimulate your child’s natural desires and processes for building skills and knowledge. We have added new and improved curriculum designed specifically from your child’s questions and curiosities — they ask for it, we bring it! Our camp offers inspirational learning opportunities connecting children with nature, science, art, sports, and fitness. We have divided our curriculum into two parts.
