Music & Movement for Every Age
At The Montessori School of Hamilton, our early childhood music and movement program welcomes infants, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and lower elementary children. Music is an integral part of our infant and preschool programs, woven into daily school life rather than treated as an extra. Children arrive with a natural inclination toward music, sound, rhythm, and dance, and that instinct blossoms in a rich musical environment.
Children can learn to sing and move in time as easily as they learn to talk and walk when they are surrounded by music. Specialists come into classrooms each week to lead music and movement classes alongside classroom teachers and assistants, offering developmentally appropriate and genuinely enjoyable musical experiences. Through singing, dancing, and playing instruments together, children find meaningful ways to relate to their parents, teachers, and peers. Music supports cognitive, language, emotional, social, and physical development, and it adds real happiness and well-being to our school community.
Weekly classes are full of joyful, hands-on music-making: singing songs, chanting rhymes, dancing, moving, and exploring instruments. The instructor presents a broad range of styles, from children's music and classical and art music traditions to folk, hip hop, jazz, Latin, and traditional world music and cultures. The result is a rich musical experience that feeds each child's growing appetite for musical skill and knowledge.

Music Curriculum
A fully trained music teacher leads children and their classroom teachers in 45 minutes of music and movement each week, tailored to the developmental needs of each age group.
Every weekly class includes familiar songs, rhythmic rhymes, gross-motor movement activities, and instrument play-alongs.
Children and teachers dance, sing, and move together, building a strong sense of community through shared musical experience.
Each semester brings new songs, rhythmic rhymes, and tonal and rhythm patterns, keeping children engaged while reinforcing what they have learned.
Favorite music and song collections are shared every week, and the 'name your instrument' game gives children a playful chance to identify and play the weekly instrument.
The classroom is non-competitive, relaxed, and playful, honoring each child's unique learning style and developmental pace.
Our curriculum builds music skills and appreciation while also nurturing creativity, self-expression, and self-confidence.
Music development and learning are cumulative, so children benefit most when they participate consistently and on a routine schedule.

Piano Overview
Our music instructor welcomes all ages and skill levels, from raw beginners to experienced piano players who want to take their performance higher. Piano students begin with basic skills and gradually move on to scales, reading notes, music theory, and performance techniques. Lessons blend technique-building exercises with practical skills such as ear training, sight-reading, and notation, giving your child the confidence to explore the style of music they prefer. Instruction is tailored around each child's pace of development and readiness, so children learn to play real songs early on, and the teacher is happy to work their favorite music into the curriculum. At the end of each lesson, the instructor provides material to practice before the next session. Our teacher understands that every child has musical potential and that all children are able to learn and express themselves musically. Come experience music with us!
Guitar Overview
Guitar lessons are open to students in kindergarten through high school. Our instructor guides all ages and skill levels, from raw beginners to experienced players who want to enhance their performance. Students begin with the basic building blocks of guitar and progress to basic chord progressions, reading music notes, music theory, and performance techniques.
Exercises help develop playing technique along with practical skills like ear training, keeping a steady rhythm, dexterity, and singing, all giving young guitarists the confidence to explore the style of music they love. Lessons are tailored around each child's pace of development and readiness skills, using familiar beginner melodies so students learn to play real songs from the start. The teacher is happy to include favorite music in the curriculum and sends home practice material after each lesson.
