At The Montessori School of Hamilton, the first days of school center on a simple phrase: “I can do it all by myself.” To help that confidence grow, we make the transition gradual and give families a clear First Day of School Checklist so the morning rush feels manageable.
Transition Schedule
Week 1: One hour a day
Children attend school for one hour each day during the first week, with one parent if necessary. If the child seems comfortable, the parent may leave and return to pick them up at the designated time.
Week 2: Two hours plus lunch
During the second transition week, the child attends for two hours and stays for lunch. This concludes a half-day session and lets the child experience the classroom rhythm a little longer.
Week 3: A full or half-day routine
Once the child shows signs of adjustment, they may begin their full or half-day program in the third week. If the child needs more time, we continue to gently ease the transition until separation anxiety disappears and the child feels secure and comfortable in class.
